Main Aims

  • To practice reading for gist and specific information in the context of where people are from

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of adjectives (fantastic, awful, beautiful)

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Back to the board Two students standing on the board without looking at it and will be acting as "captains". The other students will be divided into two groups and will be acting as "teammates", they can look at the picture on the board. The two captains should guess the person on the picture and their teammates will give hints without telling the carachter's name.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put photo of the couple from the reading on the whiteboard. Use this to introduce the reading (Try to get them interested in the couple). Elicit some ideas - where they are from, etc.

Reading 1 - Gist (8-10 minutes) • To practice reading for gist

On the board write: New York City, Montreal, France Have them read page 16, ex 1 to decide where the couple is now. Rember to set the task before Ss read. Peer-check answers and take whole-class feedback (w/c FB).

Reading 2 - Specific Information (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Write on the board (or create a HO): What is her job? What is his job? Where is she from? Where is he from? Where do they live? Ss read ex. 1 and answer the questions. Peer-check answers and provide feedback.

Post-Reading 1 - Focus on vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Provide learners p. 16, part 4. Ss complete the gap-fill and check in pairs. Use listening 2.11 to check answers and check the meaning of the adjectives (i.e. is it good or bad) Drill pronunciation of awful/fantastic/beautiful

Controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice the conversations

Have learners practice the conversations. Provide feedback and error correction as whole class.

Post-Reading 2 - Speaking practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice and develop productive skills (speaking)

Using only the pictures and names from workbook p. 13 ex. 11, have Ss create their own dialogue about the places they are visiting. Monitor and do task feedback and error correction.
