Reading & Vocabulary Lesson - Technology

Description

In this lesson, students learn about 'mind blowing facts about modern communication' through reading. The lesson will be a guided discovery of the topic as well as learning new vocabulary. Students will be given a lead in, followed by reading, and then a variety of lessons to test their skimming and scanning abilities. The lesson will finish off with a short speaking activity based on the technology facts they read in the article.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about technology in the context of modern communication

  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary in the context of modern communication

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will put up a few images on the OH of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, coffee shops, wifi etc. I will then ask the students the following questions: 1. What is the first thing you do when you wake up? 2. How many times a day do you look at your phone? 3. How many times a day do you check Facebook/Instagram? 4. Do you have wifi at work or at home? We will discuss these questions and brainstormed around the idea.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will elicit, concept check, drill, WB, and then drill the following words that could pose problems in the text: 1. Viruses 2. Hacker 3. Access the internet 4. Million and Billion 5. Wifi Hotspot 6. Online account I will use some images to assist with my elicitation

Pre-Reading/ While Reading - Prediction Stage & Gist Task (8-10 minutes) • To help the students predict the content of the text and to provide a less challenging gist and overall meaning of the text

Prediction Stage Ss to work in pairs and try answer the multiple choice questions using their background knowledge, or guesses. Feedback given through discussion and WB. Any confusion of numbers can be addressed at this stage. Gist Task Ss to read the article and circle the correct word. I will ask Ss to underline the part of the text that shows the answers to assist with FB later. Check answers as a class

While-Reading - Scan for detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss to read the article for a second time and match the sentence halves. They should match the beginnings of the sentences A to the endings of sentences B. I will give Ss enough time to read the text in detail. 5 minutes. Ss to check their answers in pairs followed by checking as a class. Feedback and correction on the WB

While Reading - Deeper Comprehension Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide with a progressively more detailed activity

Give the Ss time to read through a list of questions. I will ask them if they have any doubts about the meaning of the words or phrases in bold. If the Ss have doubts, i will ask questions about the context to make the meaning clearer. Students to then work in pairs and take turns answering the questions. I will circulate and monitor for interesting answers and possible DEC on the WB.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss to work in pairs or small groups to discuss the article, more particularly what they found most interesting. During feedback, found out what the class thought was most interesting. Discuss DEC on the WB.
