As a post-listening activity, SS will talk about a set of related topics to share their ideas and opinions around is it a Men or a Women thing? In the end, students will have a speaking game in order to consolidate their understanding.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Develop listening skills. Listening for gist and listening for specific information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a free group speaking practice to share ideas and different points of view. It will be presented in a game format. The game consists of 20 questions, which students should pick a number form a bag by chance and answer accordingly. Some of the questions are directly related to the “spa”.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start to talk briefly about my holiday plan, then ask students what is their plan. I will say as I am very tired I want to relax, what do you do when you are tired except sleeping? It will continue by showing some pictures of the spa and ask students about the photos. Where is it? what are they doing? Students should talk in pairs and share their opinion.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To engage interest in the listening that follows and pre teach any vocabulary that may be a problem for understanding

T introduces the topic that will be covered in the listening part, showing a funny picture of 2 journalists (Joanna and Stephen) while having a treatment at a Spa. Ask ss what they think about the picture, ask them to look at the woman and man's face. Do they look happy? Are they having a good time? what do they have on their face? I will ask the students to read the introduction of the text and share their opinion in pairs. Pre-teach ss related vocabulary that will come up in the listening: hydrate- sticky- horrible I will elicit MFP of the words: what do we say when we see something very bad? Horrible Imagine that you ate watermelon, your hand is... Sticky ( body language will help here) have you ever had dry skin? what did you do? what is the opposite of dry? Hydrate

Listening practice 1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

I will give instructions for the first task. I will ask students to look at the chart and get ready for listening: students will listen to complete a chart with how well Stephen and Joann marked each of the 3 treatments and what comments they had for each one of them. Students should only fill the section of the marks. they will check the answers in pairs

Listening practice 2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Task 1. Students will listen for specific information to complete the chart providing more details on how they marked the treatment and the reasons why they liked or not the treatment. I will pause the audio after each treatment to allow students to write their comments individually and when they do this they can check with their partner for feedback. Group feedback will follow to find the correct answer. This will be the procedure for the following 2 tapes scripts. Task 2. (exercise d): students will listen to 5 extracts (short sentences) and complete the word that is missing in the sentences from exercise d. Most of the words have been pre-taught in advance. This will help to review the vocabulary and double-check students know the pronunciation and the spelling. Task 3. I will ask the students to watch a short movie and listen carefully. The clip is about forbidden activities in Spa. Then I will ask the students to talk about those activities and share their ideas in pairs.

Speaking practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity for speaking practice and expand on what they have learned

I will introduce a speaking game, by which students will practise and consolidate what they have learned. The game consists of 20 questions related to spa. students should select a number and answer the questions. Those questions will ask students opinion about spa and related topics.
