Description

In this lesson, my students will be given a recording to listen to. During which I will help to focus their attention on the listening text and guide the development of their understanding of it. The activities involved will be placing the photos in the correct order (gist), as well as a specific information task for detailed listening. As the basis of this lesson is to 'Tell a life story', the final task will be for the students to use the basis of activity 2 to write sentences about their own life.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and specific information through a listening practice using a text about life stories in the context of a certain person.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with a task based approach to listening using recorded material in order to improve the students speaking abilities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In order to revise the language form the last class (past time phrases), I will ask the students questions about what they did yesterday, last week or during their last holiday. I will not let this go on for too long or allow for any of the stronger students to dominate the conversation. in order to get them chatting, I will tell them what I did on the weekend. (on Saturday I went on a Bosphorus cruise with my friends) - I will use an image to elicit this.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach any vocabulary essential to understanding the text

Definitions written on the board, print outs handed to the students. Ss to come up to the board and stick the words next to the definition. Thereafter feedback and vocabulary discussion ensue. (Pronunciation, stress, and meaning) 1. Cousin: a child of one's uncle or aunt 2. Decision: the action or process of deciding something 3. Retrain: teach (someone) new skills to enable them to do a different job. 4. 'Lost touch': no longer communicate with someone 5. Hobby: an activity done regularly for pleasure 6. Graduated: Successfully complete an academic degree, course of training

Pre-Listening - Prediction (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible and discuss vocabulary

While working in pairs, students look at the photo's from Alice's photo album and discuss the following: 1. What can you see in the photos? 2. What different parts of Alice's life do you think the photos show? Feedback and classroom discussion

While-Listening - Gist Task (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will listen to an audio based on a person's life story. Maria is narrating the story of her cousin, Alice. Students listen to the recording and put the photos in the correct order. Check in pairs and then as a class over the answers and discuss any feedback on the WB.

While-Listening - Scan for Detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Give Ss time to read through the heading from the handout so they know what they have to listen for. Listen to the audio a second time. Ss makes notes and then check in pairs. Feedback will follow, corrections where necessary.

While-Listening Deeper Comprehension (5-7 minutes) • Set a task requiring progressivvely more detailed comprehension.

Give Ss a few minutes to read through the phrases in the Useful language box. Ss listen to audio again, and tick the phrases they hear. Followed by Meaning, Form and Pronunciation of a sentence: She was born in London in 1972 - (S + PAST SIMPLE verb (is) + adj + preposition + place + preposition +time)

Post-Listening - Post Text ( Speaking: Writing for fluency) (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are going to tell a life story about themselves. Use handout (choose the correct answer) to give some ideas for sentences. Ss to construct about 6 sentences or facts about themselves. Ss work in pairs to talk about themselves. Teacher to circulate and make a note of good language to praise later, followed my DEC on the WB from any errors noticed.
