  • To provide the students with some verbs and verb phrases

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Making conversation, using colloquial language in the context of Relationships

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To personalize the situation by showing some pictures of mine with friends. They will discuss who those people are in pairs and they say their ideas to the class.

Test #1 (3-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The students will be given some handouts about the people in the pictures. According to the pictures the will guess which text is about which picture. The new verbs and verb Phrases are used in the handouts. The students may know some of the words or may be able to deduce the meaning of them from the text.

Teach (5-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The students will be provided with the new language, its form, meaning and pronunciation presented on the board. (English File Intermediate Student's Book, Vocabulary Bank, page 158)

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

They will discuss some questions about a relationship between themselves and a close friend, boyfriend or girlfriend in pairs. Then they will talk to the class about it. (English File intermediate Student's Book, page 50, part C)

Semi-Controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide the students with the topic of the freer practice

The students will listen to a radio programme talking about friends on social networking sites. According to the audio, the students will mark three sentences True or False. Then they will check the answers with the board. (English File Intermediate Student's Book , page 51, parts "a" and "b"

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will be given some questions about friends on social media and they will discuss them in pairs. (English File Intermediate Student's Book, page 51, Part e)
