Description

By the end of this lesson students will learn the difference between the present simple and the present continuous through listening contexts.

Materials

Abc New English file pg 70, handouts, power point presentation

Main Aims

  • Grammar: Students will learn the difference between the present simple and present continuous through listening contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Listening: To expose students to grammar tasks through listening.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Teacher will show the students 2 pictures of Egypt's attraction places -Students will discuss in pairs -Teacher will elicit ideas -Teacher will then hand out 4 pictures of London's attraction places -Students will discuss in two big groups -Teacher will elicit answers -Teacher will write down the name of the 4 places (show them on a power point)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Teacher will discuss the hard words in the listening task (guidebook, battle, castle) -Teacher will play the listening for the first time -Students should number the pictures in order -Students discuss answers in pairs -Teachers feedback and Answer keys Teacher will play the listening one more time -Students will fill the gaps in ex 1 C -Students discuss answers in pairs -Teachers feedback and Answer keys

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Teacher will elicit the name of the tense by giving an example -Teacher will write the form for both tenses on the board (Main form, Question form and the negative form) -Teacher will elicit ideas from students regarding the difference between the present simple and present continuous - Teacher will drill several times -Teacher will also elicit ideas regarding the uses of the present simple (Difference between the two tenses) *We use the present simple tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or routines – things that don’t change. *We use the present continuous to talk about actions which are happening at the present moment, but will soon finish.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Students will be given a task to make sure they understood the clarification part 6D (a) -Students will discuss answers in pairs -Teachers feedback and answer keys

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Students will be grouped in pairs (One student will be the tour guide and the other will be the tourist) -The tour guide should suggest places in Egypt for the tourist to visit. -Teachers feedback and error-correction
