In this lesson, the students are going to read an adapted article about Britain from The Times newspaper. The focus is on the vocabulary.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about places and people in the context of a person's idea about Britain

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of places and people in their own country.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

They are going to see a picture of Starbucks. As they know what it is, they will talk about what people can do in a Starbucks cafe.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary through pictures

The students will see some pictures from different places and different people. They will talk in groups about where the places are and what people do in those places.

Reading for specific information (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students see the pictures of the article that are numbered. They try to match the given phrases with the pictures.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and the context

The students are going to listen to the article. They listen once, and try to say what they have understood from the article (first to their partners and then the teacher).

Reading for deeper comprehension (8-10 minutes) • To check the understanding of the article

The students are going to listen to the article again and try to mark the given sentences as True or False individually. Then they will compare their answers with their partners and then it will be checked with the class.

Follow-on activity (5-7 minutes) • To look for any other new and useful vocabulary in the text apart from blocking ones

They are going to read the article again and look for some given verbs in the text. They will try to guess the meaning of each verb in groups.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and let the students use the TL

The students will discuss their guesses about the meaning of the verbs with the class and the teacher will clarify the meaning when needed.
