In this lesson, Ss will learn about the use of degree modifiers ( incredibly, really, very, quite, a bit). They will understand the difference between each modifier then Ss will practice and finally play a fun game.

Main Aims

  • To teach Ss the difference between the 5 degree modifiers "A bit, quite, very, really, incredibly" ,and when we use them.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To get the Ss to form sentences using the modifiers.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher uses slideshow to introduce the target language to Ss.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher gives student quick practice to check their understanding. Ss discuss in pairs.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher asks Ss "how delicious is doner for you?" Ss answer individually.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher explains when to use modifiers to Ss and how to pronounce them, then gives them a quick fill in the blanks exercise. Ss work in pairs.

Guided Practice (8-10 minutes) • Faciliate Student work

Teacher demonstrates then asks Ss to work in pairs and ask each other questions.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher divides students into teams. Teacher puts five cards face down on the floor , each one containing one of the five modifiers. A person from each team has to choose one card and make correct a sentence using the modifier in there. The team that comes up with the most sentences wins.
