Abc Paper ball
Abc Cutting Edge, Third Edition, Sarah Cunningham, Peter Moor, Jonathan Bygrave, Pearson Education Limit

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Norms on night life in countries in the context of youth life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of daily life words in the context of travel, hang out, having fun at clubs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We can start our group conversation by tossing a paper ball to take turns in talking about our free time activities. They will be asked "What activities do you do at night?" and they start talking by getting ball landed in their hands.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

They pair up and discuss the questions in exercise 2. Then they can share ideas.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

They will first be asked to read the text individually and underline new words at the first time. Then they can pair up and help each other to find or guess the meanings.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

They should ask and answer three questions about the texts they read in pairs so that they can remember the new ideas and words they faced in text at the first time.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They will discuss the meanings of bold phrases extracted from texts in exercise 5 on page 77 in groups. As the final stage If I have more time I'll have them to prepare a text like the ones in book by using the phrases they have in hand on paper strips.
