Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of words that they already know in the context of daily life

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Revise the vocabulary from the previous lesson. Introduce the new topic; engage students.

Teacher uses some pictures of the vocabulary that the students have previously learned. They repeat and play a quick game with the pictures on the board. Teacher shows the students new pictures for the new vocabulary.

Set the context (2-4 minutes) • Describe the situation from which the language will be presented.

Teacher asks the students about the things in their bags, on their table - e.g. "What is that in your bag?", "What is this on the table?"

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • Introduce the TL. Personalise the situation. Create a need for the Target Language. Gauge extent of Ss knowledge.

Teacher asks the students to put some stuff from their bag on the table. Ss discuss what they have in their bags and in the classroom.

Focus on TL (3-4 minutes) • Involve and give SS opportunity to produce the TL. Highlight the pronunciation.

Teacher gives the correct pronunciation and the stress for the new vocabulary. Teacher and students make drills together.

Clarify TL (4-6 minutes) • Check SS understanding of the concept. Highlight the form of the TL.

Teacher revises the new vocabulary by using the materials and making sure that there are no pronunciation errors.

Practice 1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide controlled practice of the TL.

Students complete a gap-fill activity for the new vocabulary. Teacher monitors. Students compare answers. Teacher checks.

Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss an opportunity for freer practice of the TL.

Learners work in pairs to match the new vocabulary with their representative pictures. Teacher walk around the classroom to check.

Feedback (1-2 minutes) • To encourage Ss; to help Ss learn from their errors.
