Reading - News Stories
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be tested on their reading abilities as well as linking certain questions and answers to the text/articles provided. The student should be able to read efficiently and quickly as well as take prompts from images. As their teacher, we will work through 3 exercises questioning their interest in news, matching article headings to the news article provided, and eliciting questions involved with reading and news. This lesson will allow for students to use their imagination.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills for gist and detailed understanding in the context of reading a news article.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide and enable students to develop their speaking skills in the context of the news articles, and think out of the box.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Handout 3 photos from recent news stories and proceed with a group work involved discussion.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Asking questions and using prompts to elicit questions from the students relating to how much news they read, where they read and how often.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Discussion on what is the most popular means to read news, discussing which way is best and openly discussing these questions with the students.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

This step requires students to read out the headings on their given material. The next step is for the student to guess what the article is about. Thereafter there will be student and teacher interaction to discuss their thoughts. The students will then read the given articles (handouts) and review whether or not their answers were correct.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Discuss any problems which arose. Thereafter a quick 'fun' activity can commence - Each student is write a heading for a news article that would be describe something about their life. It could be a current event, life event, or anything that reflects their life. eg: 'South African teacher wows students in Turkey.'
