Reading - News Stories
To enable students to develop their reading skills for gist and detailed understanding in the context of reading a news article.
To provide and enable students to develop their speaking skills in the context of the news articles, and think out of the box.
Procedure (37-50 minutes)
Handout 3 photos from recent news stories and proceed with a group work involved discussion.
Asking questions and using prompts to elicit questions from the students relating to how much news they read, where they read and how often.
Discussion on what is the most popular means to read news, discussing which way is best and openly discussing these questions with the students.
This step requires students to read out the headings on their given material. The next step is for the student to guess what the article is about. Thereafter there will be student and teacher interaction to discuss their thoughts. The students will then read the given articles (handouts) and review whether or not their answers were correct.
Discuss any problems which arose. Thereafter a quick 'fun' activity can commence - Each student is write a heading for a news article that would be describe something about their life. It could be a current event, life event, or anything that reflects their life. eg: 'South African teacher wows students in Turkey.'
