In this lesson , students will practice and improve their reading skills by being exposed to some life experiences about how to balance between work and personal life .

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about work life balance in the context of working hours

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of how to balance your life


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

tell the students about my way to balance my life between work and personal life . ask the students about their daily routine , then ask them about their opinions about their work . encourage the students to think of different ways to deal with the problem they face at work .

Pre-Reading . (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

give the students handout 1 about matching some definitions with vocabulary . check the answers as pairs the discuss the answer as a whole class . give the students the reading text .

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks.

ask the students to read a text about work life balance carefully . tell the students that the text is divided in four parts each part related to a person (Ronan , Jo , Marcus , and Lily) After they finished reading I give them handout 2 , hold it up and tell them that they have 6 multiple choice questions . ask the students to answer the questions individually . move around the class to see if they are moving on the right instructions as i gave to them . then check answers in pairs . Answers ; 1.c 2.d 3.d 4.c 5.d 6.a .

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

ask the students to a more challenging reading to get more details . give students handout 3 and tell them that it is a task to answer 6 true or false questions ask them to answer individually the check answers as a whole class . during they are doing this i should be monitoring them to take notes and help if needed . give the students the answer key to be sure that all their answers are right . Answers : 1. t , 2.f , 3.f , 4.t , 5.t , 6.f .

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

ask the students to respond to the text in a speaking productive way by asking them the question (what are the advantages and disadvantages of your working situation? what would you change if you could ? ). give them my answer about my question and let them speak freely about their answers .
