Description

In this lesson, students will learn about some countries social customs through speaking activities that will enhance their fluency.

Materials

Abc Cutting Edge Intermediate pg 76/77, Answer Keys, power point presentation, handouts

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to speak about different social customs in different countries through speaking activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • Vocabulary: Students will be familiar with words that are closely related to the social customs
  • Listening: Students will boost their listening skills and will also learn some social customs through this listening task

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Students will be given pictures of 6 different social customs in 6 different countries. ( The students will be given printed out pictures) -Students will be divided into two big groups to discuss the social customs and guess to which country does it belong to? ) -Teacher will illicit some ideas from students

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Pre-teach: -Teacher will show the students the pictures of the 3 vocab words (pictures from the previous lead-in task) -Teacher will illicit ideas, as students are supposed to guess what the word is from the pictures shown -Give definition of the 3 words (social customs, to greet, split the bills) -Drill effectively Listening task: -Students will answer ex 1A -Students are supposed to listen to 8 people speaking about social customs and match it with the box (What topics in the box did the 8 speakers mention) -Give a demo with instructions -Discuss answers in pairs -Feedback and teacher provides answer keys

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

-Teacher will scramble the useful language and will let the students categorize them under two sections (What to do/what not to do) -Drill sentences and then ask the students which words are stressed in the sentences (important words in the sentences) - Students will work individually (brainstorm tips for a foreign visitor to Egypt) referring to the box on page 76 to help them - Teacher will make a demo, for instance; behavior between sexes= It is not allowed to shake hands with women

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-Students are going to play roles ( in groups of 2 ) one student will act as a local citizen and the other will be the visitor -Students will then switch roles

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After the productive task teacher will give feedback and error corrections
