Main Aims

  • To provide practice of words/phrases related to work in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role-play in the context of interview between a manager of a radio station and an applicant.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss some pictures of different jobs. Ss discuss which one they would like to do most/least and why. T asks Ss to discuss with a partner.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T asks Ss to sit in pairs. Then, T shows Ss the activity on the screen, and tells them to put the words/phrases under the correct heading. Ss discuss their opinions at the same time. ICQ: Are we working alone or in pairs? 'Pairs' Next, T gives Ss the handout. T monitors Ss from the back while working and notices the difficult word/phrases Ss may find.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T goes through the answers to the previous exercise. T highlights the ones which Ss students had problems with, paying attention to meaning, form and pronunciation of the vocabulary items.

Controlled Practice (Test #2 ) (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T changes the pairs. T puts the worksheet on his/her chest, then tells Ss that they should replace the definitions with phrases/words from the vocabulary worksheet. Ss work in pairs. ICQ: Are we working alone? 'No. In pairs' Finally, T get o/c feedback.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T changes the pairs. T tell students the a popular TV News Station is seeking Trainee Reporters. T shows them the job ad on the screen. T tells Ss that they will role-play the interview between the manager and the applicant; Student A is the manager of a TV news station, Student B is the applicant. Ss have 5 min to prepare for the interview. ICQs: Are we going to work alone or in pairs? 'In pairs' Are we going to role-play an interview? 'Yes' Are we starting right away or preparing for the interview? 'Preparing first' How much time do we have to prepare? '5 min' T gives out role cards (and job ad). T monitors Ss while they perform the interview in pairs. Finally, T get Content / Language Feedback.
