Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Communication in the context of TED Talk.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Communication in the context of TED Talk.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • Elicit students prior knowledge.

Pair Students to ask each other what kinds of communication they use in everyday life. T writes some examples up on the board.

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss read and choose the best option to complete the summary in Part 1. Ss check each others answers. T provides answer key.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

T will group Ss in 3. T will handout a set of sentence strips and then a set of definitions to match them with correct word in bold. T then provides answer key.

While Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T models phrases for Ss to listen and then repeat. T plays recording for 3a. Ss underline elided sound. Ss check their answers. T provides answer key T plays recording for 3b. Ss fill in words they hear. Ss check their answers. T provides answer key

While Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T hands out questions on a handout. The handout includes part 1, 2, 3 & 4 After each part, Ss check their answers. At the end T provides answer key for whole handout.

Post Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In part 5, Ss will choose the correct meaning of the words. In part 6, Ss will work in pairs and complete each sentence half.

Critical Thinking pre-speaking activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to develop an opinion

In part 7, Ss will give advice or make recommendations in preparing a presentation. In part 8, Ss will agree or disagree with the comment. T will facilitate and provide feedback

Presentation Skills activity (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond and expand on what they've learned

Ss are grouped. Ss give advice to others on what they should worry about when presenting. Ss then identify some Tips they can include. S groups develop a presentation that includes some tips and at least 2 of the vocabulary words.
