TP 7 - A terrible journey
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson SS will brainstorm ideas and language related to the topic. They will then do tasks to active their top-down processing in preparation for listening to a recording of a woman talk about a terrible journey she had by plane. Ss will then repeat the story using pictures to help them and then share their own personal travel stories.

Materials

Abc Listening text
Abc WB

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the receptive skill of listening for general information and then for a more detailed understanding in the context of Travel & Tourism

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking and using vocab to talk about a journey they remember in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and activate top-down processing

* Write the word 'Travel' on the WB. Ask Ss what ways can people travel? Elicit answers and write them on the board (by plane, car, boat, bicycle, train etc). * Circle plane and at the top of the WB write 'arrive at the airport' and at the bottom 'arrive at destination'. In pairs Ss to discuss and write the stages involved with traveling by plane. * Ss can check their answers with another pair and add to or change their list * Elicit the stages and write them on the WB using only the key words (terminal, check-in, passport control, duty free, gate, board, take-off) * model and drill (terminal, check-in, gate and take off)

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text, make it accessible & establish key words

* Write on the WB - plane, weather and feelings * In pairs think of some problems that may happen when traveling by plane eg. lost luggage. They need to think in terms of the above 3 words * Elicit ideas onto the board focusing only on key words needed for listening. Add key words when/where necessary PLANE WEATHER FEELINGS delayed storm scared oxygen mask lightning fear bouncing terror crash * Use my pictures and CCQs if/when needed (see analysis sheet) * model and drill key words and elicit where we put the stress

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students practice of listening for a general understanding

* Put Ss into groups of 3 (airport, plane, terminal) * Show the picture cards (HO 1) and explain that they are going to listen to a woman talk about a terrible journey by plane. However before they listen try to put the pictures in the correct order. NO TURKISH ALLOWED!! * Monitor * Play the recording and check their order. * Give the correct order (HO 2)

While-Listening #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed listening task

* Ss to listen again and make some small notes next to each picture (on the answer paper) as to whats happening in the picture. * In pairs tell the story using their notes - take turns one picture at a time

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* Ss to think about a journey that they remember, write some notes and share with 2/3 other people
