Description

In this lesson SS will learn about a reading text through different reading strategies.The lesson starts with a short lead about Madonna`s career through the use of a video. After a short discussion SS will have some gist a and reading for details to find the best summary of the writer`s opinion. Next they will have a short exercise to get to the meaning of the new vocabulary. Following that through jigsaw reading and cross grouping they will have a controlled activity to answer the more detailed questions on the text. Following that students will discuss in groups what they think about Madonna and if they agree with the author in a freer activity. Finally, if there is time they will have a freer speaking activity where they can speak about their favourite singers,/bands and discuss their opinions in a mingling activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about on Madonna in the context of image in a career.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a in a discussion about famous singers or bands and their careers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T comes to the middle shows a picture of Madonna and asks `do you know this person?` - T explains they will watch a short video and asks: `Who is this person?` `What is interesting about her appearance?` -T plays the video and discuss the questions with the SS. `Are there many changes in the person`s appearance?` - Does she have an interesting style? -Discuss whole class.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T states the SS will have some vocabulary to fınd the meaning -T gives HO on the new vocabulary - SS try to do it in pairs and then check in pairs. - T monitors and take notes. - T mentions some harder words for the class and ask the meaning and let the other students correct the mistakes. - T tells the students to unfold the paper and check their answers.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

- T states that the SS will find the appropriate title for the paragraphs. - Spreads HOs to SS. - SS answer individually and then check in pairs. - T monitors and ask some of the tricky questions. - SS correct each other. - T projects the answers on the powerpoint.

While-Reading #2 (10-14 minutes) • Provide more challenging detailed questions

- T mentions some of the vocabulary the SS recently learnt. - SS forms 2 groups. - SS are given HO and each group is given 4 questions each. -First SS matches the missing parts of the sentences by using cut ups. - Then SS will try to answer the questions in groups. - 2/3 of the SS change places with the members of the other groups and explain the answer of their questions (pre-speaking exercise). - T tells the answers are outside on the walls. so group A will look at the left wall and group B will look at the right wall. They will just read the answers and come and tell the answers, the other members will do the same as much as possiible. - T spreads an answer key.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- SS sits individually. - T states that each person will think of her favourite singer or band. - SS will stand up and mingle and ask several questions about their favourite people. -Who is your favourite singer? Where was he/she born and raised? What types of clothes does she/he wear? What's her/his most favourite song? What is interesting about her? SS may add questions if they like. - T models first and let the SS mingle. - T plays an energetic song. -T monitors and motivates them.
