TP 4 - What are Friends?
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students will do a listening exercise to hone their gist listening and detail listening skills. The will also be introduced to the wider vocabulary of friendship and look at how we decide who is a friend, a colleague, a peer and a stranger. The two aims will hopefully connect to give them a deeper understanding of how the word "friendship" is used.

Materials

Abc Handouts from Global Elementary Handbook
Abc Audio files, Global Elementary
Abc Text of Audio Script

Main Aims

  • A listening exercise which will test for gist listening and detailed listening

Subsidiary Aims

  • The vocabulary of Friendship and how English speakers understand it

Procedure

Warm Up, Intro (7-10 minutes) • To introduce what is specific to Friendship relations as opposed to other types of relationships

To introduce basic vocabulary - family; friend; colleague; peer; acquaintance; stranger and connect it to exercise 1 on page 38 of Global Elementary.

Exercise 1 (5-7 minutes) • To have students look into the 4 suggested terms

I will introduce the exercise on the WB and have the students break into pairs to discuss the task.

Exercise 2 (5-8 minutes) • To have the students speak with each other about their friends, family, town, et cetera.

I will break the students into pairs to practice speaking and monitor them.

Listening Exercise (13-17 minutes) • To have the students listen to an understand the meaning of 4 spoken exercises

I will play 4 audio clips for the students, and ask them to match them to the pictures in their HO. I will also pose a number of questions to test their understanding; "Who is speaking?" "Are they friends/colleagues/family?" "What are they asking?" This exercise is based around the larger idea of showing interest in others, and offers some practical examples of how this is accomplished.

Exercise 3 (5-7 minutes) • Speaking

In pairs, students will pick a topic from exercise 1 and talk to each other about it. I will monitor and provide FB.

If time exercise (5-7 minutes) • To drill the vocabulary

We will play a game to see if students have understood the vocabulary of friendship.
