Cities and places
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, the students are going to learn about cities and different places through two skills (listening and speaking). I will give them different activities which need both individual work and group work. the lesson starts with a discussion about Istanbul and places that the students like or don't like. this activity will be followed by a listening task, they will listen and answer the questions and compare them with their own personal experiences. the students will also have to work in groups to write as many countries as they could and then pick the winning team. they will read the country's names and I will correct their pronunciation. The last activity is a game in which students are fully activated.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about Life on a Scottish island in the context of Cities
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Cities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of adjectives in the context of Cities

Procedure

questions about a city they know. (10 minutes) • Introduction to the theme.

I will tell them which places I like in Istanbul and which places I don't like, I will tell them to write three sentences about places they like in Istanbul and why they like them and 3 sentences about places they don't like in Istanbul and why they don't like them. After they have written their sentences I will take the papers and mix them. I will randomly give them back to the students and ask them to read what is written on the paper and say whether they agree or disagree with the statement.

Listening Task (15 minutes) • To serve as a model for speaking activities (and, by extension, for real-life situations).

I will give the instructions about their listening task, I will give them time for reading the first section of the questions and let them listen, after that I will introduce them with the second section of the questions and let them listen again. After answering all the questions, I will give them two more questions for more discussion.

Country names (8 minutes) • to help them correct their pronounciation

I will split the class into two teams, I will tell them that they have only one minute for each team to write as many countries as they could. The winning team will have to read all the countries that they have written, and the other team will add more countries to the list.

Revision game (10 minutes) • to encourage the students to speak.

I will have powerpoint slides with pictures of places in Istanbul, the students are already familiar with them. and I will have a student sitting in the middle of the class with his/her back to the board the students will have to describe the place without saying its name. the student will change every time he guesses the place.

cocnlusion (2 minutes) • To summarise the main ideas of the lesson for the last time.

I will tell them which topics we covered and what they have learned during the lesson.
