Description

In this lesson, ss will practise listening to a text about two ways in which people get wrong words .Malapropism means the wrong use of one word instead of another word,as in the phrase power pants and spoonerism describes a verbal error in which a speaker accidentally transposes the initial sounds or letters of two or more words, often to humorous effect, as in the sentence you have hissed the mystery lectures

Abc hand-outs-some cards -a table of two columns

Main Aims

  • SS should be able to listen for gist ,details and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide some practice and applications of using vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I ask ss to give me examples of words they always mishear. To make this clear .I will write this sentence on the board: They want to ban weapons of mass production. I ask them to identify the mistakes in the sentence.The mistakes are only word usage. 1. Are you going to find grammar mistakes? 2.Do you laugh when you hear it?

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

ss will give some words and phrases they always say wrong .and I will ask them to match them with spoonerism or malapropism I will present the new vocabulary by eliciting

While-Listening #1 (5-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask the students to listen to the text and try to find answers to these two questions: 1. what are they talking about? 2. Are they talking about mistakes or correct examples?

While-Listening #2 (5-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Listen again and answer: What mistakes did people make? SS check answers -and swap groups to check others'answers- SS listen again and check answers.show them the answer key

Post-Listening (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ex.3-SS work in pairs and correct the mistakes the speakers said - ss coorect one another -show them the answer key Present the extend your vocabulary activity and draw a table and divide it into 4 columns and ask ss to fill in using words that have the suffix-ism.
