Description

In this lesson, students learn about action words through guided discovery based on the picture dictionary. The lesson starts with brainstorming about their ability to activate their prior knowledge. This is followed by a game by which students will draw, act or explain the target vocabulary. Finally, students will work in a group to create a short comic strip about their superheroes and her/his abilities.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Action verbs in the context of Human's and superhero's abilities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of use the verb: "can" and its negation in the context of Action verbs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class starts with a review of the previous lesson's target vocabulary and sentence pattern with games. This is followed by a brainstorming activity for the target vocabulary.

Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Melody Picture Dictionary p. 31-32 Activity 1: Pointing and reading the target vocabulary. Activity 2: Spelling game to memorize the form.

Highlighting (11-13 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the task

Introduction to superhero abilities: what can and can't they do by using a short video from Spiderman, Superman and so on.

Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes) • Prepare students for more meaningful practice

Review and closing • To allow students to talk about their comic strip

Students display their comic strip on the whiteboard and describe their hero's abilities.
