Description

In this lesson students learn about the usage of phrases to describe holiday preferences and plans through guided discovery based on reading text about packing for holidays. The lesson starts with a discussion about types of holidays. This is followed by a word and picture matching activity to activate vocabulary. Then students read a short text about packing for holidays. Then there is controlled practise through question formation and free practise via a final speaking activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the photos of different types of holidays and ask questions to engage the students. Then I will ask students to match the pictures with the words to review key words.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will have to work in pairs and decide which of the items they would take on their holidays and describe the reasons.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will show students the sentences and they will have to decide if they are true or false. Then students read the text to check the answers.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will emphasize the phrases in the text and explain the meaning and their forms. Students will be shown sentences where they will have to match the sentences with the same meaning and give reasoning for their answer.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will have to complete the questions by using correct phrases to describe plans and intentions. They check the answers in pairs and then I will provide them with answers.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in pairs to answer the questions.
