Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about student conversation about summarizing a documentary using notes in the context of Ancient Structures

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a presentation about an ancient structure using notes by making full sentences in the context of Ancient Structures

Procedure

1.Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson, create interest and elicit background knowledge.

Remind ss Thang Long Citadel by showing a photo of it which they saw in the unit opener on page 143 and questions asked by T. - What is this ancient structure? -Where is it? -How old is it? -When was it found by the archeologists?

2.Pre-listening (7-8 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and provide controlled speaking practice

SS go to p. 156 and read the student notes about the documentary called 'Uncovering The Past in Hanoi' in ex. A ask CCQs - What was the documentary about? -What was discovered? -How was it discovered? - What is diff./ c./ gov't/1000's? (Write on WB) SS work in pairs to talk about the documentary by using notes and making full sentences.

3.Listening for Gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide a controlled listening practice for gist

Ss try to guess the answers to questions about the main idea before listening first with a partner and then they share their answers with the whole class. Later T plays the track and ss complete ex. A They compare their answers with their partners. A student gives feedback on smart desk projection.

4.Listening for Details (5-6 minutes) • To provide a controlled listening practice for details

Ss answer questions in ex. B Nominate a student to write the answer key on WB. Show detailed listening Qs OHP SS discuss questions with a partner. Nominate students for the answers

5. Making an inference (3-4 minutes) • to provide inference skill practice

Elicit how to make an inference by CCQs. - Suppose I say 'Thang Long Citadel is not the oldest ancient wonder'. Do I know an older place? Did I say I know Göbeklitepe is older? -How did you find this result? - When you understand a message when it is not said openly, what are you doing? SS read the statements in ex. C and mark them as true or False. Then they compare their answers. Feedback is given as a WC.

6.Post Listening (7-8 minutes) • to provide practice on interpreting notes using the stragtegy in the conversation

SS answer the Qs in ex. A on p 157 to practice the strategy they heard in the conversation. They compare their answers. After the feedback T asks if they made full sentences.

7. Speaking (12-13 minutes) • to provide controlled speaking practice for accuracy

SS work in groups of 3 Pass out Presentation Notes HOs. SS choose an ancient site. SS read the notes about an ancient structure. Give time to prepare a presentation individually. SS, then, make a presentation one by one in their groups. They turn notes into full sentences. They can show a photo of this place on their phones.

8. If time activity (3-5 minutes) • to provide free speaking practice

ask SS to choose the best presentation in their groups. they explain their reasons in their groups and discuss their decision.
