Description

In this lesson, students learn about gerund-infinitive through guided discovery based on a reading text about likes and dislikes. The lesson starts with a reading text. This is followed by a listening based on the same reading. Finally, students are guided into an inductive grammar exposure with some exercises.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells stds to do Exercise 1-A & B (Make a list of 3 things you love and 3 things you hate) and work in pairs and compare their ideas

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T tells the stds to do Exercise 2 (Read the magazine article. Put a tick by the things you like, and a cross by the things you don't like - 3 mins). Then, T asks them to speak in pairs Exercise 3 (What did you agree about? & Can you think of any other things that people either love or hate? - 3 mins). Finally, T tells stds to do Exercise 4 (Listening for gist - 2 mins). When the audio is over, they check answers (2 mins).

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T tells stds to do Exercise 5 (Listen to the sentences and underline the verb form that you hear). After they finish, T checks the answers (2 mins). Next, T wants stds to complete the Grammar Box, and when they finish, T checks answers (2 mins).

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T asks them to go to page 158, and T explains the structures by giving examples and clarification (5 mins).

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T asks stds to do the Exercises 1, 2 and 3 in Practice 1 (5 mins). When they finish, T checks answers (2 mins).

Semi-Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T tells them to go back to page 99 and do Practice part (2 mins). When they finish, T checks answers (2 mins).

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T tells stds to do Exercise B in Practice part by asking and answering questions in pairs.
