Subsidiary Aims

  • for the s's to be exposed to useful vocabulary in the context of traveling
  • have the students practice reading for gist in the context of an article

Procedure

lead in (3-5 minutes) • to introduce the topic and contextualize the text

I will have the s's work in pairs and ask the question "how do you like to travel? Why?" to each other. I'll write the question on the board and write a few possible answers e.g. by bus, by plane, by train

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To introduce vocabulary found in the reading text

I will give the students words and answers cut up on small pieces of paper, working in small groups I'll have them match the words with the meaning. Then I'll have them check their answers on sheets which I'll put on the walls. Finally, I"ll check the words with the class focusing on the stress and pronunciation of the words, which I will have written on the WB.

While-Reading for gist (8-10 minutes) • to have the students get a general idea of what the text is about

I will have the s's work in small groups and give them a picture related to the text. I will ask them to think of words related to the picture. Then I will give each students a copy of the article and ask them to see if the words they wrote are the same as the ones in the text. I will give them 5 mins for the first task, 2 mins to check and 1 min to check as a WC

While-Reading for detail (10-15 minutes) • to have the s's read for more detail

I will give the students some questions, and have them answer the questions individually. I will have them check in pairs, and then as a WC
