TP 7: TBL Speaking
Elementary level

Description

In this task-based learning lesson, students will be tasked with coming up with their own Utopian society. Working in groups, ss will have the chance to identify which problems their own country suffers, and offer possible solutions and ideas to implement in this new Utopia. The teacher will take a monitoring role, offering help when needed and taking notes on ss mistakes, offering feedback at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice using the context of modern society and its problems.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice and acquire some new vocabulary around the theme of living in society.

Procedure

Pre-task / lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic and set the task

Brainstorm vocabulary/phrases onto the board related to the topic: problems and positive things about their city and country (e.g. transportation, pollution, festivities, population, etc.). This will serve the ss as a reference point during their task, creating their own utopic island.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

I will provide some example phrases about problems we experience living in a city, and possible solutions that we could implement in our perfect island. E.g. There's too much noise Istanbul, pollution and traffic are also big problems. In my island there will be no cars or motorised vehicles.

Task I (5-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will be asked to create their own utopic society. In pairs or groups, they will have to come up to solutions to the problems laid out in handout 1. Ss will be able to practice related vocabulary, and brainstorm together before presenting their Utopia/dream-island to the rest of the class. Ss are required to decide on: the name their island, population, weather, language, topography. (see HO1)

Task II (5-6 minutes) • To provide fluency practice

Ss will be asked to create their own utopic society. In pairs or groups, they will have to come up to solutions to the problems laid out in handout 1. Ss will be able to practice related vocabulary, and brainstorm together before presenting their Utopia/dream-island to the rest of the class. Ss are required to decide on: the annual holidays / celebrations, how people will dress, transportation, and create some general laws to rule this Utopia. (see HO2)

Planning (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Ss will have to specify their ideas/plans for their Utopia, in order to later explain them to their classmates. Each pair will choose one speaker to carry this out.

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Ss will present their ideas to the rest of the class.

Language Focus (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

I'll write on the board three good phrases used by the students during the task and five incorrect ones.
