Stop, try, remember: gerunds and infnitives
A2/B1 (Pre-Intermediate) level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about gerunds and infinitives (try, stop, remember) through the context of social media. Lesson opens with ordering scrambled sentences. After MFP is introduced, Ss choose the correct words in the sentences. This is followed by 2 ice-breakers, practicing the TL. The lesson ends with "Two Truths and a Lie" writing activity.

  • To provide process writing practice of a conversation in the context of gerunds and infinitives

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Prepare cut up sentences on the tables. Unscramble a sentence on the board in order to demonstrate an example. Make students race to put the words of a sentence in the correct order. Display the answer key on the board, circle gerunds and infinitives.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss read the grammar box and match the sentences according to the meaning in pairs. Distribute the answer key.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Check understanding using the answer key for ex.1: Stop: miming Remember: timeline and CCQs What happened first: remember or live? Try: CCQs Is it difficult to live without social media now? Do I want to know what will happen if I try to repair? Draw attention to the form by highlighting it in the grammar box Drill "media" if Ss make mistakes in pronunciation

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss choose the correct word individually ICQs: Will you do the exercise in pairs? Group check. Ss circle the answers on the board. Comment the mistakes if there are any. Give points for the correct answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Show the question on the board Ask Ss to give advice using "try" and "stop". Give an example: " Try spending more time outside", "Stop browsing the Internet without any reason". Make Ss consult in groups As Ss to write the advices on the board: 1 student=1 advice. Sum up the results of the competition

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Demonstrate 3 sentences about yourself on the board. Highlight gerund and infinitive constructions. Ask Ss to guess which sentence is false. Make Ss write 2 truths ans 1 false sentences about themselves. Encourage Ss to move around the classroom and make a pair with a new partner. Ss guess in pairs the false sentence. Correct mistakes on the board.
