Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Speaking activity in the context of Luck

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Introduce the theme ''Luck'' to Ss

Explain the word luck as following to students by doublechecking with them like ''Luck is a success or failure appearently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions right? So there are two divisions as good and bad luck'' Then I will show the 3 photos of items that are believed to bring luck Then I'll start telling a short story about myself: ''Once upon a time, while I was preparing for my university exam,I had planned to check questions first and then mark the answers to answer key for 2 months before the university admission exam.So the day came and I put my plan into progress.Everything was going well for me until I started with maths and science questions which were rather more difficult than I expected so I had not estimated it before. When the time was up,I had only marked the answers to answer key until the 11th question of Maths and more than half was still there unmarked! So I had chosen a 2 year division at university and then I had to complete it to BA the 4 year of university!'' Finally I will ask the Ss ''Had you felt lucky in their lives and then say for example have you ever won a lottery?'' Then I'll get their short answers

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I'll tell a short story about myself regarding lottery ''I had played Milli Piyango only once or twice in my life which even wasn't for my own.I had given my lucky numbers to my friends, however they didn't win anything at the end.And today I never play lottery because I find it useless'' I will elicit marker sentences in the story ''I had played lottery only once or twice'' ''I had given my lucky numbers to my friends however they didn't win anything at the end'' I will use the CCQs and Time lines paper here Then I will ask CCQs to Ss: ''Are we talking about the past?'' (Yes) How many actions are there in the past? (Two) Did both actions happen at the same time? (No) So did one action happen before the other? (Yes) Which action happened first? (she left) Then I'll ask the Ss if they won a lottery in their lives.Tell them to discuss in pairs

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will drill the pronunciation ''He had won the lottery'' ''He'd won the lottery'' ''She had not won the lottery'' ''She hadn't won the lottery''

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use my oxford English grammar pages here and use the grammar explained there and write the examples on the whiteboard by drawing a timeline I will also mention about the linking words ''After,After that,Just,Before,Then''

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will tell students to fill in the exercises on Straight Forward handouts. Then they will write the answers on the board Then I will write my own past perfect sentences by putting the word order wrong on the whiteboard and students will write their correct forms occasionally by getting help from each other. '' I had worked as a waitress before I went to Portugal'' I/Portugal/Had Worked/Went to/As a waitress He had finished his work and then he went out His work/went out/he/finished'' Ss will try to put the correct linking words ''before, after etc''

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Then we will listen to the audio and ss will check their answers
