Description

The topic of this lesson is work. Sts start by learning words and phrases related to work and these are practised orally in Speaking. The grammar focus is on when sts have to use a gerund or an infinitive and the context is a questionnaire which helps people to see what kind of job would most suit their personality. The grammar is practised in a communication activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Job quiz. T puts sts in small groups and write the following quiz questions on the board. Can you name....? -two jobs which people do in a restaurant - two jobs connected with transport -two jobs that people do at home -two jobs where people spend a lot of time outside - two jobs in entertainment T elicits answers.

Exposure (25-30 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Sts in pairs match the pictures and sentences. T elicits answers and T models and drills for the pronunciation of the bold words and phrases. Then sts again in pairs complete the verb phrases with a word or phrase from the list. Then match the adjectives and definitions. T elicits answers and drills for their pronunciation. To practice the vocabulary, sts think of someone they know who has a job and prepare answers to the questions then work in pairs and interview their partner about their person's job. T walks around and helps them if they need it. Sts read the questionnaire called the right job for you and tick the sentences only they strongly agree with. Then discuss it with another student. T gets some feedback.

Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T gives few minutes and Sts choose five topics and write a couple of words and think about what they are going to say. T demonstrate the task by talking about a couple of the topics herself. Sts in groups of three or four tell the other people in the group what they have written. The others listen to find any similarities.

Planning (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Sts now check their notes and corrects them to tell whole class about the similarities they have found. T walks around and helps them with the words and structure.

Report (10-15 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Sts report their findings and other groups listen to find the similarities and asks more questions. T takes some notes from sts' reports and corrects them on the board.

Language Analysis (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

In pairs, Sts go back to the questionnaire and underline the gerunds and infinitives, then complete the rules with the gerund or infinitive. T elicits answers and go through the rules about gerunds and infinitives.

Language Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Sts in pairs do some exercises to practice the gerunds and infinitives. T walks around and helps them if they need it.
