Coffee Break
Pre.- Intermediate A1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn new vocabularies and items commonly collocate with 'coffee'. The lesson starts with a short discussion about 'tea and coffee' .This is followed by learning new vocabularies. For example; 'addict', 'variety' . It continous showing pictures. The students try to guess the meaning of them.The teacher asks different questions related to coffee or tea. Ss read the article and try to understand and focus on the context.And then ss match the paragrahps with the pictures in different groups. Ss try to explain the connection between coffee and the countries. Finally, ss try to find words in the article that match the definitions.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give a chance for using new vocabularies and items commonly collocate with coffee. Ss learn new words related to coffee.They can use them in daily activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will have the chance to read the article about 'coffee' and new information about famous people and different things (animals, countries, flags etc.)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher brings a cup of coffee, and starts to drink it. And asks the students 'what am I drinking?'. Ss answer it 'coffee'. And write 'coffee break' on the board.The teacher wants them to guess the context.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher writes some unknown words on the board and try to explain them.For example 'addict, bean, varieties, orginally ' . The teacher shows some pictures related to the article and wants the students to give some sentences about them. And the teacher shows the photos of 'Balzac and Beethoven' And then asks the students whether they know these famous people or not.The teacher writes some country's names on the board and pronounce them with the students.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher gives HOs to the students and gives the students five minutes for reading. And then the teacher let the students works in groups. The students discuss about the photos and match them with the paragraphs. And the ss answer the questions in different groups.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher shows some flags to the students .They try to guess the countries looking at the flags. The teacher puts the photos of flags on the board and asks the students write the countries' names .And the teacher gives them second activity, the students explain connection between coffee and the countries and write them on the board. The teacher gives them third activity, they find words in the article that match the definitions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher gives different items commonly collocate with coffee. Verbs ( have a cup of coffee, sip a coffee etc.), adjectives ( black, white coffee etc.) and coffee +nouns ( coffee cup, coffee shop etc.) The teacher gives HOs to the students and wants them fill in the blanks in 3 minutes in groups, and asks the students to use new items collocate with coffee in different sentences,orally.
