Description

This lesson is centered around students learning to talk about their daily routine. To prepare them they will learn the vocabulary necessary to tell the time, and learn collocations of the verbs 'have', 'go' and 'get' with actions they perform in their daily lives. Afterwards students will have the opportunity to use their new language skills in a speaking excercise.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will be able to ask and answer questions about their daily routines, such as "What time do you...?"

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have had the opportunity to use their new vocabulary to practice speaking about their routines.

Procedure

Lead in (3 minutes) • To introduce the theme of telling the time and check Ss knowledge of numbers

WIll draw a blank clock face on the board and Ss will help fill in the numbers for the hours and minutes. This will be used in the next stages for teaching vocabulary.

Exposure (10 minutes) • To introduce TL and relevant terms

Introduce vocabulary: - hour, minute, o'clock, half, quarter, past, to Introduce forms: - "Twenty-five past three" and "Three twenty-five" Will check understanding briefly by asking students to draw hands on a clock to match a given time.

Practice 1 (7 minutes) • Very controlled practice of TL

Exercise reading the times on clocks, and writing hands onto clocks for times they hear.

Exposure (6 minutes) • To introduce TL

Vocaulary exercise 1 in textbook - to find the daily activities listed in the reading from the previous lesson, and identify which verbs are used with them. This should introduce the idea that certain words are usually used with certain verbs. Ss to compare answers in pairs.

Practice 2 (6 minutes) • Very controlled practice of TL

Vocabulary exercise 2 - guessing which verb to use with each word. Ss to work in pairs, and will then feedback with the whole class.

Clarify TL (3 minutes) • To focus on particular examples of collocations which might cause confusion.

"I wake up" vs "I get up" "I go home" vs "I get home"

Practice 3 (10 minutes) • Controlled practice of TL

Ss to ask each other "what time do you...?" questions, and answer them in pairs. Followed by "What do you do at... o'clock?"
