Practicing the receptice of reading and also introducing vocabulary and providing speaking practice in the context of meeting places.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce vocabulary related to the context and provide speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks: Write down the names of your 3 good friends on a piece of paper. T: Now tell each other in PW about one of your friends. T: Write on WB Where is your friend from? Married? Children? Do you work together?

Vocabulary Building (6-9 minutes) • To test vocabulary with a cross check exercise

ABC grouping. Chest HO exercise 1 T asks Sts: Discuss where. Give Sts 4 mins for this discussion. Monitor Groups tell each other the answers T write on WB problem words and work on MFP where needed. Pay attention to at home not just home Pay attention to shopping centre/Mall

Pre-Reading vocabulary practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with target vocabulary practice

Demo on WB. Find someone who Draw a table and write: (use cinema as an example) demo with Sts. Do you like meeting your friends...........................? Yes, i like meeting ............................... No i don't like meeting ................................ MINGLE AND WRITE NAMES IN BOXES. WC FEEDBACK - ask who likes meeting in a cafe/at the cinema /at home

Gist reading (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task.

T Chest Exercise 2 T: Read and decide where, ignore the gaps. Check in PW the answers WC FB for each passage ask WC the answer and see if there are different answers ask why? Ask are you sure? is it not in a market? Is it not in a square?

Pre-teaching text related vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with new vocabulary from the text to help them with the reading task

T: write 'Window shopping, main square, outdoors, busy' on WB First try to elicit from sts the meaning then teach. Look at the Language A.page for WB words and write them with stress and if not too slow with Ph

Reading for details (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading task.

Ask Sts to look at the next exercise no 3 on their HO. Ask them to look at the phrases. Check understanding as this maybe be a challenging task for them. Change pairs by moving the first chair across. T: ask Sts to fill in the gaps with phrases. Check answers in pairs. WC feedback - choose different Sts than the last ex to do this. answer key: d, c, a, b

Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

STS to get into groups of 4 T: Have the names of 3 good friends they wrote on a piece of paper ready. Ask Sts to tell each other what they did last time they met and where they met with these friends. If time, ask weaker students in each group to tell the WC. Thank sts and hand over to Richard.
