Description

This lesson begins with some speaking practice to get students engaged and introduce the theme of the lesson which is 'Travelling in Australia'. The main focus of the lesson is reading, and is centered around a travel blog entry. Students will be encouraged to skim a portion of the text for gist first, and then conduct detailed reading to find specific information.

Procedure

Lead in (5 minutes) • Introduce theme of the lesson

Ss to guess the country of Australia from a series of clues. Quickly build a mind map together of Australian 'things'.

Speaking Practice 1 (6 minutes) • Develop theme of the lesson, Practice speaking

Discuss 'Do you think Australia sounds like a good place to live? Why?' 'If you had to live in another country, where would you choose? Why?'

Speaking Practice 2 (6 minutes) • To introduce Uluru (Ayer's Rock)

Read short piece about Uluru and discuss in pairs (Speaking exercise 3)

Reading Practice 1 (8 minutes) • Gist reading, introduce context for the detailed reading exert

Read the first part of Nerina Klein's blog post. In pairs Ss will discuss the questions in reading exercise 1. Review answers as WC.

Exposure (4 minutes) • To introduce new vocab required for the reading.

Reading Practice 2 (16 minutes) • Detailed reading

Read the blog post and find the adjectives Nerina Klein uses to describe the things specified in Reading exercise 3. Compare answers.
