Description

In this lesson, students will read an article where a life coach talks about helping a client to change her lifestyle.; his client talks about her experience with the life coaching sessions. In the beginning, students will be discussing some questions in pairs about what changes they like to make in their lives. In the Pre-Reading stage, I will introduce the new lexis to students to figure out their meaning. Then, students will read the passage quickly for gist. After that, in pairs of A & B, they will read different parts in the article and answer some questions and compare their answers. The production will be a speaking activity where students discuss some questions together.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with the opportunity to read for gist, specific information and details in the context of "Lifestyle Changes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice their speaking skills for fluency to talk about their future plans/changes
  • To provide students with clarification and practice of some new words in the context of "Lifestyle Changes"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Ss discuss the following questions in pairs: 1. what would you like to change about yourself or the way you live? why? 2. How would you go about making the change? - Share ideas with others. - General FB

Pre-Reading - New Lexis (8-10 minutes) • To enable students deduce the meaning of some lexis using the context clues in the article .

-Ask Ss scan the article drawing their attention to the underlined words /expressions in the article. - Encourage them to use the context clues to deduce the meaning of the underlined words. -In pairs, students check their answers. - Write the words/expressions on the board. - Ss use a Gap-Fill HO to complete using the words / expressions -Monitor and help if needed - Check their answers against the answer key. -W/C FB

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to read for specific information

-Ss will work in pairs A and B. A. will read the introduction and text A and answer the questions B. will read the introduction and text B and answer the questions. 1. what changes does Ginny want to make? 2. Why did she approach a life coach? 3. How did she feel about the experience at the beginning? 4. Why did her opinion change? 5. When does she hope to achieve her final goal? - Ss compare their answers with their partners. -Monitor for help as needed -W/C FB

While-Reading #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with detailed information from the text

- Ss read their partners' texts then work in pairs and find the answers to the questions below: 1. how long has Ginny been trying to give up smoking? 2. How long have Ginny and Brian been working together? 3. What did Brian and Ginny talk about in their first session? 4. What was the first step Ginny decided to take? 5. What will Ginny be telling Brian about at this week's session? 6. What is the next step going to be? 7. When do they think she'll have given up smoking? - Ss check their answers in pairs/groups -Monitor for help if needed - C/W FB

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice speaking for fluency

- In pairs, Ss discuss some questions. 1. Do you know anyone who has given up or tried to give up smoking? how did they do it? 2. Do you think that going to a life coach is a good way to stop smoking? 3. Have you ever made a significant change to your lifestyle? what was it? Did you find it difficult? - In small groups, students share their ideas - C/W FB
