  • To provide gist and detailed information in listening practice using a text about city of Bath in the context of my home town

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will remind Ss that I am from Iran but I born in Istanbul. I live in Istanbul and most of my life was in Istanbul. I will elicit My hometown. I will point out that we use this phrase to talk about the place where we live (or born), even if we live in a city. Ask some CCQs. Can my hometown be a city? Yes Is hometown where you live or born? Yes I will say I think Istanbul is a great city to live. And ask "Who else thinks Istanbul is a great city to live?" Ss will reply. Ss will see the presentation (first part including images) as I elicit hometown and some places like airport and mosque that we have in Istanbul. 3 min Ss will write some words of other places that they know in Istanbul. Later Ss will share with class. 2m

Pre-Listening 1 (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introduce this stage: we are going to see more words about places in a town or city. Ss will see EX1a from the book in presentation and in handout1. Give instructions: Look at the pictures. Match these words to picture 1-9. Give handout1 to ss. 1m Ss will do the exercise. 2m Ss will check their answers with their peers. 1m Monitor for positive FB and to see if there is any error Ss will check correct answers from presentation. 1m Check if Ss understood well and elicit the meaning of the words with asking examples.e.g. Haldun Taner theatre, Istanbul Archaeology Museum. Ataturk & Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Gezi Park, Haydarpaşa Station, Cevahir shopping centre (mall), Fırat river I will point out that we use station to mean a train station. (write on the board: station = train station) Ss will listen and repeat the words (available on presentation) 2m Ask Ss what they think the dot on the words mean? I will point out that the stress in bus station and shopping centre is on the first word. Ss will practice the words with EX1c from the book. 2m Ask ss to fold the handout paper so they can't see the results and test their partners by asking about each picture. Do a demonstration first. Monitor and FB for the end 2m

Pre-Listening 2 (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introduction for this stage: "We are going to have a listening but before that let's see if you know these words." In continuation of the presentation, show images from presentation (images) and elicit and drill these words from Ex2a. Famous: Ask Ss: Who is this? Michael Jackson, Cem Yılmaz, Queen Elizabeth Most people know them so they are... hot spring: Ask Ss: What is the name of this place? Pamukkale Pamukkale is a ..... Swim: What are these people doing? They .... Can you swim in pamukkale? Train: What is this? A..... A mile (they probabley know mile but let them guess "How many kilometers are 1 mile?") Ask ss which countries use miles (imperial system).

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Use the picture in presentation and Introduce the stage: Now we are going to listen to Susan talking about her hometown. Ask questions the following questions: What can you see in the photo? Can you guess the city? Drill the words Bath and England Ss will answer what they see in the photo. Bring the question in presentation: Does she like living in Bath? Ss will listen to the track from presentation and asnwer.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Introduction to the stage: now we are going to listen to Susan talking about her hometown Bath. Give Instructions. Ss will read the questions on page2 of the Handout1 from Ex3b. Monitor if ss have any problems with the words in the questions. 2m Ss will listen to the text and answer. 2m Ss will listen again and answer. 2m Ss will check their answers with their partners. 2m I will give the answers from answer key in little papers to every pair to check. 2m Monitor and give feedback for any word they didn't understand or if they a generalproblem with one of questions

Post-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Introduce this stage: Now let's talk your hometown. Where is your hometown? First Ss will write the name of their hometown and at least 3 place that they have in their hometown or they don't have in hometown. What is famous in your hometown? Give a demonstration. Monitor if they undestood what they are supposed to do. 1m Make Ss in different groups and ask them to tell their friends about their hometown. They can ask question if they want? 4m Monitor and give positive FB for their efforts. Error correction if necessary.
