In this lesson, students learn about the lexis of hotels.The lesson starts with visuals, this is followed by both visual and written activities.Since speaking is the sub-aim, it is integrated to most of the activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of hotel lexis in the context of travel and holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel and holiday


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The pictures are going to be introduced to the students with the help of projector. The ideas for the pictures are going to be collected from students one by one, with every picture, till they reach the context, 'hotels'.Starting with Sagra da Familia, Barcelona, then where to stay in Barcelona, then to the hotels in Barcelona.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask about the word 'Location' Which question should I ask to learn the location? Elicit information from students. Where is it? Location is written on the board, drilled. The pictures are shown with the projector and get the students talk about the location of the hotels.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Board is seperated into 4 parts:Location-Room-Hotel Facilities-Room Facilities Phrases are written on small coloured papers. Students are divided into groups of 4.Every group has 5 phrases. They are asked to match the phrases with the words on the board.(Groupwork) countryside,satellite TV will be done as examples. Feedback :WC FB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Handouts Before giving, tell the students that they are going to match the pictures with the sentences. Then, that they are going to choose the four most important facilities from the list (on the board) for the following people. Peercheck.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Write on the board: Which room or hotel facility is the most important for you?Why? They will have 1 minute to think, and first person starts to answer. The students are going to ask each other and answer one by one. Teacher puts a star near every chosen facility and in the end it is going to be counted and what will be the 'champion facility'?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The students will work in pairs.They are all going to stand up and ask the questions in the handouts to each other.They are going to choose 4 questions. Handouts are given.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As a homework, Using the website; 'Pick a hotel which you want to stay in, then write a short pharagraph explaining its facilities.'
