Description

This lesson will focus on vocabulary in the context of hiking or camping in the outdoors. Students will learn words such as camp stove, backpack, first-aid kit etc.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of camp stove, sunscreen, video camera, backpack etc. in the context of hiking/camping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of compound nouns in the context of hiking/camping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in PICTURE REVEAL (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On W.B. slowly begin drawing pictures of a camp site while students shout out what they see

Exposure (PREPARING FOR A TRIP) (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students are going on a trip and must gather some supplies. 1. Introduce Materials 2. Students "fill" their backpack - "Do you have something blue, round, soft etc." 3. FB elicit lexis from students

Highlighting (MATCHING) (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Distribute MATCHING H.O. (PW) 2. Early Finishers board answers 3. FB

Clarification (GAP-FILL) (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Semi-Controlled Practice (PACKING) (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

students are ready to pack their back packs for the adventure up MT. Erciyes. But first they must decide what they are going to take! They only have room for 6 items. 1. Explain activity and re-gather Lexis cards 2. Pairs Choose top 6 3. Gather into Groups and now limit top 3 4. FB - "Why did you choose your top 3 items?" - "What do you think class? Are they going to make it?"

Free Practice (STORY BOARD) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will work in groups and build a story together using the lexis cards. Each student will take a turn choosing a picture and making a sentence. Then the next student chooses a different picture and ADDS a second sentence AFTER repeating the first. The story grows as they move along.
