  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about X factor

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of X factor and music

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have Ss discuss the quote 'In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.' by Andy Warhol. Talk about the word 'famous' what does it mean? What famous people do they know?. Go back to the quote and ask Ss what do they think it means? do they agree or disagree? Why?.

Pre-reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare Ss for the reading text

Look at the title of the text 'X Factor Winners: Where are they now?' and the pictures on slide. Talk about the word winning. Explain to the students that the people in the photos are previous winners of the show the X factor. Watch the video of the winners. Have Ss discuss in pairs who they think is the best? which of the singers are 'winners' today?. After Ss discuss in pairs have a discussion with the whole class on there predictions.

While-Reading 1 (8-10 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for specific information

Have Ss read the text quickly and check there predictions from the previous stage. Have students check with there peers before FB. During FB go over the answer of who is still famous / a winner today? and why they have found that answer.

While-Reading 2 (10-12 minutes) • To encourage Ss to work out meaning of vocabulary

Help Ss with understanding meaning with matching task on handout focusing on highlighted words in the text. On the power point slide photos will be shown with the words to help Ss with understanding of the vocabulary. Have Ss work alone, then check with peers before going over answers as a whole class.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • Encourage Ss to respond to the text and allow for personalisation.

Have Ss discuss the question in small groups; (ex 5c) 'Do you have a similar programmes to X factor in your country? Can you remember the names of some winners? Where are they now?'. Go over some of the discussions with the whole class.

Feedback (6-8 minutes) • To provide Ss feedback

Go over any problems the Ss may have had during the task. Ask students if they have any further questions about the topic.
