Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail in the context of "Wedding Bells"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking in the context of "If you Ask Me" for fluency and practice using the new vocabulary

Procedure

Lead-in / Pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students

-project a question for students to discuss: "Marriage is a thing of the past" - Ss think-pair and share their ideas before the open FB. - prompt Ss to predict what the text is about.

Pre-Reading - Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • to enable students to understand vocabulary items related to the text

- explain some vocabulary related to the text through matching words to their definitions. - students check their answers in pairs/groups - Take FB from students - Ask some CCQs to check their understanding -Drill for pronunciation.

Reading for gist (5-10 minutes) • to read for a general understanding of the text

- Ss read the passage to check if their predictions are correct. - prompt peer check to build their confidence before an open class FB - W/C FB

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • to develop reading for detailed information

- Hand out parts of the texts on strips of cards for the students to put in order. - Ss will work in groups within a time limit. - Monitor and record any problem areas to focus on in feedback if needed. - prompt early finishers to re-tell some details from the story. - Show the order of the text and take FB

Post -reading (8-10 minutes) • to allow students to give their opinions and practice speaking

-Ask Ss some questions related to the text: 1. is marriage changing in your country? how? 2. at what age do people usually get married? 3. what are the advantages and disadvantages of getting married? - Ss share their ideas with the class. - General FB
