Description

This grammar lesson focuses on adverbs and prepares students for the productive writing lesson that follows.

Materials

Abc Adverbs hand- out
Abc short story hand out

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of adverbs in the context of stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about adverbs in the context of short stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students look at two sentences, one with adverbs and one without, they discuss in pairs which sentence is more interesting to read.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students quickly read 4 fifty-word stories containing adverbs and match each one to it's title. Students check their answers quickly with teacher.

Highlighting (5-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students look at the underlined adverbs or adverbial phrases in the text, think about their meaning and in pairs write them under the relevant headings: Time, Manner, Degree, Comment. Students check answers in pairs with answer key

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In pairs or groups students look at sentences and add the given adverb in the right place. Students check answers in pairs with the answer key while the teacher monitors for delayed feedback.

Clarification 2 (5-10 minutes) • To further develop student's understanding of the meaning and form of the target language.

In pairs students look at sentences, underline the adverbs/adverbial phrases and correct sentences where the word order is wrong. In pairs, students check the answers using the answer key.

Feed back (5-5 minutes) • To check student's understanding of grammar and practice pronunciation.

Students interact with teacher for feedback and correction of errors. Students drill for pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice in the following writing lesson

Students listen to a series of sound clips. After each clip students use the given adverb to complete the sentences. students check answers in pairs/groups.
