Description

In this lesson SS will do a prediction task to activate their top-down processing ready for listening to a recording of 4 telephone conversations. They will do an initial easy task, then they will read the conversation for specific info in which to compete in a race. They will then listen to and repeat useful phrases and practice the conversation they read about. Ss will then write their own conversation and practice it.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in the productive skill of speaking to make, accept or refuse invitations in the context of useful phrases

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the receptive skills of listening and reading about functional phrases in the context of making, accepting and refusing invitations

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic and the listening text

* Ss to look at the pictures on the board and look at the words * Ss to predict what is happening in the pictures with a partner * Elicit some ideas

Initial listening task (5-7 minutes) • To practice listening for specific info and to expose them to the functional phrases in context

* You will listen to Rose speaking to 4 friends on the phone. * Show the 3 questions on the board and go through them * Answer the questions while listening ICQs - are you going to listen? yes are you going to write the answers? yes * Peer check the answers * Elicit answers and write them on the board 1) Ian 2) Lucy 3) Alan

Reading for specific info (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with a specific information reading task and to expose them to the functional phrases and help them to focus on the meaning

* Show Ss the conversation HO (folded to only show the conversations) * Give Ss the conversation script HO that they just listened to * Ss read it (while they read put on the WB the answer spaces for the race) * Split Ss into 2 groups (James & Bond) - make sure the groups sit on the correct side of the WB * Show the task (other folded part). Explain that the 2 teams will have a race so we can find a winner. * Teams to find the useful phrases and run to the board to write their answers (different people each time) the team that finishes 1st gets 2 points. * Check all the answers together and give each team 1 point for each correct answer. * Tally up the points and declare the winner

Listening & Speaking tasks (6-8 minutes) • To listen and improve speaking skills and focus on the pronunciation of the functional phrases ready for freer practice

* Ss will now listen to the answers and repeat the useful phrases. * In pairs practice the 4 conversations. * Invite a good pair to perform for the class

Productive stage (8-10 minutes) • To help Ss prepare for freer speaking, to give practice in speaking for fluency & to give them the opportunity to use the functional phrases.

* Change pairs and show HO about writing a conversation - give an example * When they have written their conversation they can then practice it (swapping A & B) * ICQs - are you going to write? yes then will you practice? yes * Monitor and note any errors * Write any errors on the WB and elicit the correct way from Ss

Flexi-stage - if time (5-6 minutes) • To give Ss semi-controlled practice in useful phrases

* Show and give the flexi stage HO * Ss can complete in pairs * Listen to the answers and check
