Description

This is a Reading (Receptive Skills Lesson) helping the students to be familiar/review the target language of aging.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with gist and detailed reading practice using a text about aging and it's affect on one's life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss practice by becoming familiar/reviewing vocabulary about aging.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic.

T organizes students into 3 groups. Ss watch as the T acts out a short drama. Ss look at the pictures of the elderly people on the PP. What do you think these pictures are about? Give Ss instructions: (Write down as many things as you can about growing old and your ideas about this picture. Get into your Gs. Choose one person to write. You have 1 minute. Begin!)

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

to get Ss thinking about the reading, e.g. by looking at the title/pictures and predicting what they’ll read/personalising what the Ss know about the topic (ex 2a)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Reread the first paragraph. Highlight some useful vocabulary. (ex 2b)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read for detail and check ideas from the previous stage (ex 2d).

While-Reading 3 • to give Ss the opportunity to read the text further, e.g. for inference. (ex 2e)

Complete 2e

Post-Reading/Listening 1-2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
