In this lesson students practice listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of extreme interviews.


Abc TP1

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of extreme interviews

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice/consolidate work done on questions. To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students look at 2 strange questions (from actual interviews) on the board and answer them in groups

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In pairs students discuss whether they have ever been for a job interview and what kind of questions they were asked at the interview. (Q5a)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Teacher pre-teaches potentially difficult vocabulary such as "reincarnated" "practice philosophy" . Students listen to 5 speakers talking about strange job interview questions. Ss do a simple fill in the blank exercise as they listen. This is followed by peer checking and feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Students listen to recording again and take notes in the spaces provided (ex5c) . Teacher pauses after each speaker and allows time for notes and peer check. This is followed by a general peer check and feedback. If necessary students listen again.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs students discuss which of the questions they heard were good or bad to ask at an interview.(ex5d) Then students change partners and interview each other in pairs using "strange interview questions" provided. (p104 and p108) Teacher times them and after a few minutes has them change partners .(ex. 6a-d)
