This lesson sets a general context for all three lessons through a reading (receptive skills lesson). The main focus is on reading intensively to deduce the meaning of highlighted vocabulary from context,

Materials

Abc reading handout

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about extreme interviews in the context of interviews

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will display a photo on the board and ask Ss the following Qs as a whole class discussion: What can you see in this picture? Would you like to work in these companies? What do you need to do to get a job in these companies? filling an application What do we call the meeting you have with the company to get a new job?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The Ss will see a small piece of the topic photo and try to guess what it could be. Then they will see a bigger piece and keep guessing until they get the whole picture. At that moment, the teacher will ask the following Qs: What is this situation? an interview Is it a normal interview? No Is it usual or unusual ? Unusual The teacher will tell them the title and ask them to look at the photo (ex a) with the article. She will ask: What do you think the question is one which someone might really ask in this situation? Why (not)? WC FB

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher will ask Ss now to read the text quickly to check their ideas . The teacher will ask: Find out how would you answer the question now? ex b PC w/c FB

While-Reading #2+3 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher will write this sentence on the board: Interviewrs throw bizarre questions. She will ask some CCQs like: Did you hear the word 'bizarre' before? No in this context What do think 'bizarre' means? answer varies Does it mean normal? No Does it mean usual or unusual? Unusual How do you think did we get the meaning of 'bizarre'? from the context, the words around, and some clue/ key words as 'strange'. Now, the teacher will ask the students to read carefully to guess the meaning of the underlined words and do the exercise c with a partner. Now individually, the teacher will ask them to do ex d. peer check w/c FB The teacher now will ask them to do ex e; listen and underline the stressed syllable. The teacher will drill the vocabulary with Ss. While-Reading#3: the teacher will ask Ss to read the text again and try to answer ex f with the same partner. Ss will check their ideas in small groups. w/c FB.

Post-Reading: Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will do a follow-up task now. The teacher will ask them to take 3 minutes discussing ex g in small groups. w/c FB.
