Abc photocopied version of Unlock 2 page 106,107
Abc the video about water cycle

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about water cycle in the context of environment

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of water and climate in the context of environment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask them "What's the weather like today?" "Do you know any other weather conditions?" "What happens when it rains too much?* Elicit the word "flood" write it on the board. Don't forget to drill it before writing on the board. Try to elicit water shortage ask "Do you know what it is when there is not enough rain and not enough water" They probably won't know this. explain "water shortage" comes before "drought" when there is no water for a long time. To generate discussion ask them"Does everybody prefer same weather conditions?" Is climate changing in Turkey?

Pre-Listening (8-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Do task one. Pre-teach some vocabulary. They do it alone then check with their partners. Later give them the answers. 1d 2a 3b 4e 5c Next they do T/F activities. remind them they need to correct it if they are false. They do it alone. Give 3 minutes to answer. 1T . 2F( oil rises to the top) 3F (dust kicked up by vehicles traveling on roads may make up 33% of air pollution) 4T 5T

While-Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

They watch first minute of the video without sound. They predict what the presenter is saying. Ask them to use ideas from the previous exercise. Don't give the answers yet. Watch the whole video and let them check their answers.

While-Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Ask the to try to remember and match the numbers with the facts in exercise 6. Don't give the answers yet. give them 2 minutes to match the numbers. Show the whole of the video and and they check their answers. 1c 2d 3b 4a

While Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

They try to answer open-ended questions.(exercise 8) They check the answers first with their partners. They watch the video again and check their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They match the types of weather with the climate words. Make clear that they have similar meanings with their match. 1e 2a 3d 4b 5f 6g 7c

post- listening (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They discuss 4 questions with their partners and share their ideas with the whole class.
