Description

In this lesson the students are going to learn about the past simple tense and the past continuous tense through reading a small passage about a past event(receptive skill) and the students are going to write their own paragraph

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of The past Simple Tense and The past continuous in the context of Holidays and Travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past event or holiday
  • To provide product writing practice of witing a paragraph in the context of past incident/event

Procedure

Lead in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On board I would stick a number of pictures and try to elicit their names and/or meaning which are related to the topic. After that I will write the elicited words and ask the student to match them with the suitable picture. This will give the student some movement and active interaction.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • to provide context for the target langauge (past simple and past continuoun tenses) through reading a small passage

I give the students 5 minutes to read for gist individually and find the answer of when was the event and what was strange? I then ask the students to share their answer with their peers

Highlighting target language (8-16 minutes) • To draw student's attention to the different form betweenthe past simple and past continuous tenses through a passage

I give the students clear instruction to read thoroughly the passage and underline every and each verb in the passage.The students read the passage but with more attention to the verbs that indicates the meaning of a long action and the verbs whose meaning refers to a short action. On the board, I draw two column ; column A for regular verb past form, column B for irregular verbs students try to get the different verbs from the passage I monitor them to see their progress

Clarification (5-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning , form and pronunciation of past tense regular and irregular verbs and the -ing form

#To draw Ss' attention to the duration of each tense #To elicit that past simple verb means a short action and the past continuous shows and means a long action. #To elicit the form of the two tenses #On Board , Ss complete the Form Subject + Verb in past subject + was/were + verb-ing form

Cotrolled Practise (5-10 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of meaning and form

#To give the students clear instruction about the gap filling hand out exercise. #Students have fixed time to work individually in order to answer the exercise. #The correct answer will be hung on the wall. After they finish doing the exercise they will go to the wall and check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practise (5-10 minutes) • To provide the students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand what they have learned

I introduce a game for the students. In pairs, I ask one student from each pair to start a sentence like "I was walking at the beach when.........." the other student should complete with suitable verb and in the correct form. This game will be fun as well as generate new ideas. Then Students will shift their partners . I would listen to their sentences and correct any mistake on the spot.

Free Practice (15-20 minutes) • To practice the new target language through writing

I ask students to write a short paragraph about a past personal event. I give them 15 minutes to think and write down.. I ask them to share their work with the student sits next to him/her. I also allow them to read loudly their paragraphs to improve their self-confidence of speaking in front of the class. I give feedback on their paragraphs and correct any mistakes
