Description

In this lesson, students learn to read for a gist and specific information about Shakira. The lesson starts with a discussion about some pop singers. This is followed by a pre-reading - prediction & gist reading exercise. Then a pre-reading - vocabulary exercise followed by a reading for specific information and detail exercise. Finally, A post reading activity where students tell what they read to a partner and do an interview.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and specific information in the context of the pop star Shakira.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To engage the students and get them interested in the topic.

Post the pop singers photos on the board. Brainstorm the singers' names. Project the questions about the singers. Students in group to discuss the questions. FB w/c

Pre-reading - Prediction (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the reading and encourage them to think about the context.

Project the title and the photo. Circle the word "Barefoot" and ask the following CCQs: 1. Does a person wear shoes? (No) 2. Does a person wear nothing on the feet? (Yes) Brainstorm that Skaira is in the photo. Students in pairs to predict the connection between: "Barefoot" and "music". Shakira and the child. Set at time. Monitor. FB w/c

Reading Task 1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice in reading for gist.

Students to read the text on p22. Students to check their answers in pairs. Set a time. Monitor. FB w/c

Pre-reading - Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with understanding of the new vocabulary.

Students to do a matching exercise. Set a time. Monitor. Hand the answer keys.

Reading Task 2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice in reading for specific information and detail.

Students to be in two groups ( A & B). Students to read the questions and the passage. Students to answer the questions. Students to check their answers in pairs within their groups. Set a time. Note. No FB in this stage.

Post-reading (7-8 minutes) • To check students' understanding of the text and to provide practice in speaking.

Students to reread the text. Regroup students into pairs (A+B). Students to tell each other what they about. Encourage students to say things in their own words. Set a time. Monitor but don't interfere unless students need help. FB w/c

Freer Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with practice in speaking.

Students in groups to discuss the questions ex3. Set a time. Monitor. FB Students in pairs to do an interview
