Past Simple Lesson.
Pre-intermediate. level


In this lesson, students learn about past simple through a guided discovery based on a context of talking about music. The lesson starts with a lead-in where put the words in the correct order. This is followed by A short reading text where students highlight the past simple. After that, Students to do ex 6 SB to learn the form of past simple and ex 7 WB to learn the pronunciation. Then, students to do ex 7 & 8 SB to practice what they have learnt. Finally, for freer practice, students to do adapted ex 9 & 10.

Main Aims

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To introduce past simple. To prepare Ss for the following stages.

Highlighting Reading. (4-5 minutes) • To find out how much the students know about past simple.

Students to skim the transcript about James Bond. Students to highlight the past tense verbs. Students to check their answers with a partner. FB w/c

Clarifying meaning of TL. (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of past simple.

Write the following sentence on the board. I went to Bursa last Monday. Ask students CCQs Did I go to Bursa in the past? (Yes) When did I go to Bursa? (last Monday) Am I still in Bursa? No Where am I now? (In Istanbul) I met Darya Yesterday. Did Daray and I meet? (Yes) When did we meet? (yesterday) Are we meeting at the moment? (No) Did the meeting finish? (Yes) Draw a timeline of the days of the week, elicit from students the days that actions happened on. FB w/c

Clarifying Form (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the past simple form (+, -, ?) ( regular & irregular verbs)

Direct students to do the grammar active & Identify regular and irregular HOs. Set a time-limit. Monitor the students. Students to check their answers. FB w/c Answers to be written on the board. The past simple form to be written on the board.

Clarifying Pronunciation. (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the different ways we pronounce the 'ed' on the end of regular verbs.

Ss to listen and repeat the sentences. Ss to put the verbs into the correct column in pairs. FB w/c

Practice (8-9 minutes) • To give students practice in past simple.

Ss to complete the paragraph about Alicia Keys. Students to compare their answers with a partner. Set a time. Monitor. Freer Practice. (8-9 minutes) • To give students practice in speaking.

Students to complete How to ... box in pairs. Set a time. Monitor. FB w/c Students in pairs to ask and answer the questions. Encourage Ss to use How to when giving their answer. Tell Ss who are asking the questions to take notes of the answers. Set a time. Monitor. Take note of some errors. FB elicit the corrections.
