Description

In this lesson students are going to read a text about three different exclusive clubs and learn some relevant vocabulary.

Materials

Abc pre-teach vocabulary exercise
Abc Photocopied pages of Cutting edge Student's book page 108-9

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about exclusive clubs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of some vocabulary in the context of exclusive clubs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write on the board clubs societies. Ask Ss to write as many clubs name as possible in one minute (in a group). Then do the part 1 on the book p.108. Ask them to answer the questions in group. Then make them report to the class. Do part 2 on the book p. 108. Emphasise that they only read first few lines.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text by teaching and eliciting related vocabulary

Deliver the papers and make them matching the vocabulary and explanations in groups. If the number of the students not enough, make pair-work.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask them which society these words (elicited in the previous activity) relate to these words.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (11-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask them to do part 4 in the book. There are 9 rules given and they need to find which society have these rules.

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask "if you have to join a society or club, which one would you like to choose? Discuss with your partner,then share it with the class.
