Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about accommodation in the context of reading apartment advertisements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of choosing suitable accommodation.


Warm-up (4-6 minutes) • To give Ss a chance to talk to everyone in class and potentially get to know people they don't know in class.

T explains 'Find someone who' HO to the Ss. T gives the HO to the Ss. Ss move around the room to complete the sheet. Ss give feedback to partners in pairs.

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture of hurriyetemlak.com. Ss work in pairs and answer: What's this? Hurriet Emlak website. What can you find on the website? Apartments for sale and rent. T gets feedback and elicits the words 'accommodation & advertisement'

Reading 1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging specific information reading task.

T does example A with the class. Elicit the meanings of 'mixed' and 'bills' Ss move around the room to fill out the chart in pairs. Ss check their answers with a different group. Ss fill in the chart on the board. T shows answer key.

Language focus / vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To enable Ss to do vocabulary definition matching activity using the reading text as a context.

T explains HO. T gives HO to Ss. Ss work in pairs and match the words in the chart with their definitions. Each pair checks answers with another pair. T shows answer key on the board. T explains difficult words Ss are still struggling with using CCQs and pictures.

Reading 2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task.

T explains the task to the S where they have to find a suitable apartment for each person. T assigns pairs and gives handouts to the Ss. Ss work in pairs and match people with ads. Ss have to find a reason for their choices. T writes "We think accommodation (A) is good for (Christopher) because.... Ss share their thoughts with different groups saying why. T gets feedback from the class for each picture and why.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and personalize the topic of the lesson.

Ss imagine they are going to travel to Cambridge to study English. Ss read the ads again individually and choose suitable accommodation for themselves. Ss work in groups and tell each other which they've chosen and why. Ss share ideas with the class.
